Trump’s $14.7 Million Reflecting Pool Makeover Is Already Falling Apart
President Trump promised a Reflecting Pool renovation that would “last 100 years” and cost about $1 million. The finished product cost $14.7 million, was completed weeks ago, and is already falling apart.
The bottom of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, newly painted “American flag blue” at Trump’s direction, is visibly peeling. The pool, refilled after the renovation, also turned green within days as algae bloomed across its surface. The administration has been using hydrogen peroxide and nanobubble ozone technology to fight the algae.
It isn’t working.
What Trump ordered
Trump announced earlier this year that he wanted to renovate the Reflecting Pool ahead of America 250, the July 4, 2026 celebration of the nation’s 250th birthday, which is expected to draw millions to the National Mall.
The renovation involved draining the 6.75 million gallon basin, scrubbing out years of accumulated algae and sediment, applying a protective liner to the pool’s bottom, and painting it what Trump called “American flag blue.” Trump described his vision as “the most beautiful reflective pool between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial that you’ve ever seen.”
The initial cost estimate was around $1 million and a week of work.
The final price tag landed at $14.7 million, per a contract summary obtained by CNN and ABC News.
What’s happening now
Two problems have emerged simultaneously:
The paint is peeling. Blue material is lifting off the bottom of the pool and floating in the water, visible in photos and video circulating from journalists and visitors. WTOP first reported the peeling, with The Washington Post and CNN following.
The algae is back. Algae blooms in the Reflecting Pool every summer, it’s been a recurring issue for decades because the pool has no filtration system. Scientists told NPR this outcome was predictable. Algae growth is driven by sunlight, warm temperatures, and nutrient-rich water. A paint job doesn’t change any of those conditions.
The administration tried hydrogen peroxide treatments and nanobubble ozone technology to clear the bloom. The pool is still green.
“Algae clouded Trump’s vision for the Reflecting Pool. But scientists aren’t surprised.”, NPR headline, June 19, 2026
The political fallout
Trump’s team initially blamed Biden-era maintenance delays for the pool’s previous condition. Fox News ran a segment last spring with Trump “working to clean the filthy Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool” and crediting his administration for addressing years of neglect.
Now the $14.7 million renovation, one that Slate noted cost nearly 15 times the original estimate, is generating the kind of photos that write their own headlines.
“He said it would cost $1 million and last 100 years. It cost $14.7 million and lasted 2 weeks.”, viral post on X, shared over 200,000 times
“The pool looks like a giant aquarium that someone forgot to clean. ‘American Flag Blue’ has entered the chat.”, Reddit thread on r/WashingtonDC
“Scientists literally said this would happen. Algae doesn’t care about patriotic color choices.”, comment on the NPR article
The pool and America 250
The renovation was specifically timed for America 250, when the National Mall will be the site of the country’s largest-ever July 4th celebration. Millions of people are expected to visit the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial area.
The Reflecting Pool is one of the most photographed spots in the country. Its current condition, green water, visible peeling material, is not what the administration had in mind for the backdrop of the 250th anniversary celebration.
The National Park Service has not commented publicly on the peeling issue or what remediation, if any, is planned before July 4.
