Honda Just Recalled 99,000 Civics Over an Airbag Defect That Could Hurt Your Kid
Honda is recalling nearly 99,000 vehicles over a defect in the front passenger seat airbag sensor, one that could cause the airbag to fire at full force even when a child or infant car seat is in the passenger seat.
The recall covers an estimated 98,892 vehicles across multiple Honda and Acura models, with Honda Civic making up the bulk of them.
If your Civic is on this list, the fix is free. But you need to act.
Which vehicles are affected
The recall covers these Honda Civic models and years:
- 2017-2022 Civic Sedan
- 2016-2020 Civic Coupe
- 2017-2021 Civic Hatchback
- 2017-2018 and 2021 Civic Type R
Several Acura vehicles are also included in the recall, bringing the total to roughly 99,000 vehicles. If you own one of these, check your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) at nhtsa.gov to confirm whether your specific car is included.
What the defect actually is
The front passenger seat contains a weight sensor that tells the car whether an adult or a child is sitting there. This matters because airbags are designed to suppress or fire at reduced force when a child is detected, since a full-force airbag deployment can seriously injure a small person.
According to Honda and reporting by How-To Geek, the sensor in affected vehicles can crack and short-circuit over time. When that happens, the car may no longer accurately detect who’s sitting in the passenger seat.
The result: the airbag could deploy at full force during a crash even with an infant or child in that position.
Per Fox Business, the defect could also cause the airbag to deploy unexpectedly, meaning outside of a crash event, which is a separate and equally serious risk.
“A front passenger seat weight sensor may crack and short-circuit over time, and if the defect occurs during a crash, it could cause the vehicle’s airbags to deploy unintentionally.”, Top Class Actions
What to watch for on your dashboard
Two dashboard warning lights can indicate the sensor has already failed in your vehicle:
- SRS Airbag warning light illuminating on the dashboard
- “Passenger Airbag Off” indicator remaining unlit when an adult is in the seat
If either of these is happening, don’t wait for a recall notice. Take the car in now.
What the fix is
Honda dealers will replace the front passenger seat weight sensor at no charge. The repair is covered under the recall regardless of your vehicle’s warranty status.
Honda will notify affected owners by mail. If you want to check now, go to nhtsa.gov/recalls and enter your VIN.
Why this one matters
Takata airbag recalls dominated headlines for years because the inflators could rupture and send metal fragments into the cabin. This is different, it’s a sensor failure, not an inflator failure, but the risk is specific and serious: a car that can’t tell whether a child is in the passenger seat is one that can’t protect that child correctly in a crash.
For parents who regularly drive with kids in the front passenger seat, this is not a recall to put in a drawer and deal with later.
“Just checked my 2019 Civic. VIN confirmed in the recall. Appointment made. If you have one of these years, please check yours.”, r/hondacivic
“The Passenger Airbag Off light had been coming on weird in my 2020 Civic for months. Now I know why.”, X post circulating after the recall announcement
The recall was announced in June 2026. If you haven’t received a notice yet and your vehicle year falls in the affected range, Honda advises checking your VIN proactively rather than waiting for the letter.
