“That One Sound” is a column by internet culture reporter Charlotte Colombo, exploring the origins of popular TikTok sounds. If Instagram has “photo dumps,” TikTok is all about ” info dumps.”
Seasoned TikTokers know that info dumps—where someone records themselves for a few seconds before plastering a huge chunk of text over the screen—are an underrated genre.
TikTokers don’t need much of an excuse to info dump, and a new sound has made it even easier. With a dramatic, strings-heavy orchestral score filling the background, TikTokers start their videos with the same line:
“I lied, put your clothes back on.”
The trend imagines someone inviting someone over under the pretense of intimacy, only to share something meaningful or elaborate instead.
These “info dump”
topics range widely—from meditations on love and relationships to deep dives into the Menendez Brothers, or even requests for a full breakdown of how someone perceives them. The intensity of both the topics and the classical music amplifies the dramatic effect.
Where’s it from?
The sound is actually from the opening theme of Succession, the Emmy-winning drama about the powerful, dysfunctional Roy family. While the song has nothing to do with the TikTok trend’s content, its intensity perfectly matches the vibe.
Sound off.
So far, the sound has been used 53,700 times on TikTok. Succession has its own popularity on the app, with over 77,500 videos under the #succession hashtag, including angsty Logan Roy fancams from passionate fans.
