As access to ADHD medications like Adderall becomes more restricted, people are exploring alternatives—sometimes even turning to unconventional or questionable sources.
TikToker Lizze Buchanan (@lizzelol), a doctor of nursing practice in psychiatry, recently shared a surprising interaction she had on Hinge. In a video with 178,600 views, Dr. Buchanan describes how one match requested an Adderall prescription. Keeping her cool, she decided to play along, replying, “Yeah, no problem. Send me your birthday, what pharmacy you wanted to go to, and it should be ready in like an hour.”
Her Hinge match, seemingly thrilled, replied with a “thank you.” However, Dr. Buchanan had the last laugh, explaining, “I unmatched him. Obviously didn’t send it.” She jokingly hoped he was “somewhere at a local CVS convincing a pharmacist that a girl from a dating app promised Adderall.”
The Struggle for ADHD Medication Access
Whether he needed it or not, getting ADHD medication like Adderall has become increasingly difficult. Approximately 8.7 million adults and nearly 6 million children in the U.S. are diagnosed with ADHD. Recently, the DEA announced an increased production quota for lisdexamfetamine (Vyvanse), an Adderall alternative, yet shortages persist. Amphetamine mixed salts, a key ingredient in ADHD medications, are strictly regulated due to addiction risks, leading the DEA to impose manufacturing quotas. Despite these quotas, drugmakers shipped nearly a billion fewer doses than allowed in 2022.
TikTok Users Respond
Viewers found Dr. Buchanan’s story highly entertaining. One commented, “The audacity. There is a shortage, sir.” Another joked, “I am using Hinge incorrectly, but I had never realized how incorrectly before.” A third, identifying as a pharmacist, added, “Oh no, please don’t.”
