Internet sensation Doug the Pug was recently recognized with an honorary degree from the University of New Haven. Just before his 13th birthday on May 17, Doug was acknowledged in “furensic science” at this collegiate institution’s spring graduation ceremony.

The fun and lighthearted nature of Doug’s degree reflects the University’s notable Forensic Science program, established by Dr. Henry C. Lee. Lee, who also gave this year’s commencement speech, celebrated Doug’s recognition along with a thrilled audience of students, faculty, and guests while Doug wore his very own cap and gown.

Doug’s relationship with the University began through Leslie Mosier, his owner who collaborates with the institution on their social media strategy. Earlier this year, Mosier brought Doug to meet students on campus, a visit that also allowed an encounter with Boston Dynamics’ robotic dog, Spot. This quirky event quickly captured attention, with students expressing utter delight for the pug’s visit.

Seeing an opportunity to make this unique visit memorable, the University invited Doug to their graduation ceremony. Mosier opines, “Doug instantly fell in love with the school, and students were thrilled.” She adds that the university saw this as the perfect moment to create something unforgettable.

Doug’s fame materialized in the mid-2010s, featuring in music videos, commercials, and various social media campaigns. Although new animal influencers have emerged since, Doug has consistently amassed a devoted fan base of over 15 million followers.

According to Mosier, Doug was thrilled to take part in the graduation and relished his moment in the limelight. Mosier appreciatively acknowledges that “he absolutely adores getting recognized.”

Doug’s honorary degree will be on display in his home, and he’s all set to spend his summer in Nashville with his dog sibling, Dory. Mosier hopes Doug’s story serves as an encouragement that “anything is possible and no dream is too big—even if it sounds a little silly at first.”
